What Are Fibroids ::
Fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. While they are almost always benign, if left untreated, they can grow in both size and number causing severe cramping, bleeding, and other debilitating symptoms.
Traditionally, women in The Bahamas who were suffering with fibroids only had surgical options or had to go abroad for treatment. Women have undergone hysterectomies and myomectomies or else just accepted their condition and struggled through their lives with it.
However, since 2021, there has been a safe, minimally invasive, non-surgical, and highly-effective treatment available here in The Bahamas through Family Medicine Center.
It’s called uterine artery emobolization (UAE) or uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) and Interventional Radiologist Dr. Mikhail Higgins performed the first one in The Bahamas in July 2021 – with great success.
UFE is a relatively simple and common procedure but was never previously available locally. Now it is.
